Uber Split

The Uber Russia app didn’t have an option “A trip with a fellow passenger.”

The task was to come up with the design of this functionality called “Uber Split”, organically incorporated into the existing design. Throughout this project I worked within Uber Russia Design Team.

The design of Uber Russia is similar to the design of Uber in the U.S. The screens

are here for comparison – so that it becomes clear how the screen initially looked.

The final design solution presented below has been translated into English for

the convenience of the portfolio audience.

How I did it.

Why do users choose trips with others?

The idea to add the function of “Uber Split” was initially chosen after conducting

a JTBD study.

Direct competitors don’t have this feature, hence I needed to conduct research with the users of the apps that already had similar features. Thus, I conducted an in-depth interview with 13 users of the BlaBlaCar app.

The main questions that I needed to get answers to in order to be able to design the most user-friendly interface are:

What is important

for the user when choosing a fellow passenger?

What difficulties do users face when using this service?

Uber Split

Statistics.

Key insights.

Users need reviews from real people about a fellow passenger, so that a user is not afraid to ride in a car with a stranger.

So, I needed:

create a screen with ratings and reviews

add ratings and reviews when a user sees Uber Split in the first time

add a screen with a request for evaluation at the end of the trip

It is important that a user does not need to do extra moves to be picked up if she chooses Uber Split, and it is important to know the final route will be and the final arrival time.

So, I needed:

immediately warn
a user how her route will change if she chooses Uber Split

add a fellow passenger's route to the map

The lower price is the main factor why users choose Uber Split.

So, I needed:

indicate
the difference
with other fares immediately

warn about any price changes when we offer to pick up
a fellow passenger

describe what happens if a fellow passenger isn’t found, although
the user chose Uber Split

61% name price the key reason to travel with a stranger

69% feel safe to travel with a stranger if Uber checked their IDs and reviews

23% agree to walk up to 5-7 minutes to be picked up

Job stories.

When I order an Uber Split, I want

to see the rating of fellow passengers, so that my trip is comfortable

When I order an Uber Split, I want

to know new arrival time and new route trip, so that I can be on time

When I order an Uber Split, I want to know that the ID was checked and confirmed, so I feel safe

When I order an Uber Split, I want to see available seats, so that I don't have to drive in cramped conditions

When I order an Uber Split, I want

to see how much is the new fare, so that it saves my money

Final design.

The Uber Split fare appears among standard Uber’s fare. It’s not on the first place to avoid user’s confusion. By default user should always have standard UberX

If there is a taxi with a fellow passenger, Uber shows the ratings & ID’s confirmation of the driver and the fellow passenger

Also on the map we show the location and the destination of the fellow passenger

There’s a complex process behind this design solution—please use the desktop version for a full view, as a large screen is essential for assessing the details. For a quick glimpse, see the final solution below.
